Hi! I am Mrs. Newson and I a first grade teacher at Carpenter Elementary. This is my 8th year at this awesome year-round school and my 25th year teaching. (I had a 10 year "break" when I had my 3 sons). I have taught 2nd grade, kindergarten, several K-1 combination classes and 1st grade. I attended JMU for 2 years as a music major, then transferred to The College of William and Mary where I received my bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I received my National Board certification in 2001 and renewed in 2011.
I grew up in Roanoke, Va. where I met my husband of 40 years. We have 3 grown sons who have taught me so much about patience and flexibility. (This is when I understood what "go with the flow" means!) My oldest has his PhD in religious studies and is an associate professor at Campbell University. He has 2 sons; Atticus who is 5 and will start kindergarten this year, and Isaac who is 2 1/2 years old. My middle son is an engineer here in Raleigh and he and his wife are expecting their first child in early August (A girl- Ellis ) My youngest son lives in Raleigh also, where he is a chef and has a 1 year old daughter named Carsyn. Needless to say they keep us very busy and filled with laughter and fun!
When I am not at school, I have many other things that I love to do. I love spending time with my family in Roanoke. I enjoy traveling and my husband and I had a wonderful, long-awaited trip to Italy and Hawaii in the last few years. I love spending time with some amazing friends and I am a part of a singing group that performs around the holidays. I also like doing most any outside activity like hiking, kayaking and bike riding- (I am trying to keep agile so that I can keep up with my students!)
Teaching has been my passion for as long as I can remember. Truly, my school family is never far from my mind, even when we are tracked out. I am committed to making sure each child gets just what they need and in finding the things that spark their interests. I am mindful of the impact early education has on our children - I believe I have the responsibility of instilling an early love of learning and providing a safe place for all students to grow and learn. Thank you for entrusting your precious children to me.
